Ceramics: Wheel Throwing/Hand Building Functional Wares

Students will receive either wheel-throwing and/or hand-building instruction for creating functional and/or decorative ceramic pieces following the work of prominent ceramic artists. (For example: a mug to drink from, a bowl to hold special things in or to eat from, a mini sculpture, etc.) All work that can be saved will be glazed & fired.

*There are fewer wheels than registrants; therefore, students interested in wheel time will be expected to share time on the wheel over the course of the 6 weeks.

Ceramics: Hand Building Functional Wares

Students will learn hand-building techniques to make a functional piece and a decorative ceramic piece, following the work of prominent ceramic artists. Self-exploration will be encouraged. Work will be glazed or cold surface finished (with paints) and taken home at the end of the course.

Rachel Sligh

Rachel Sligh is a lifelong resident of the Holland Area and has been teaching art for Holland Public Schools for 24 years.  She is K-12 certified and has taught all age groups during her tenure at HPS.  She is a wife, mother, artist, and sailor.  When she’s not in the classroom, she’s typically on the water.  She’s excited to have the opportunity to branch out and work with the community through classes of art exploration!

Jennifer Gietzen

Jenn Gietzen is a music therapist, sound facilitator, and music teacher in West Michigan.  She has been working with kids and adults using music as a tool for growth and development for 20 years.  She loves playing and teaching guitar, piano, drums, ukulele, singing, and dancing.  She also loves using sound to create relaxing experiences for people who would like to incorporate more meditation and mindfulness into their lives.
